Whether this tradition really came from Germany or not, I also like this idea. I have read different ways to do it, but my favorite is to put the pickle ornament on the plate of cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve. When Santa comes and puts out the presents, he will also hide the pickle ornament somewhere on the Christmas tree. The first child to find the pickle on Christmas morning wins a special extra present or treat from Santa. To prevent fights or tears among siblings, it's probably wise to let everyone get a treat and to let the official winner have a nicer prize.
